Relational Agility in Ourselves and in our Organizations

OVERVIEW

Relational agility is the ability to make strategic, intentional decisions about how to respond to oneself and others in any given moment, with any given circumstance. In this session we will look at 5 pillars of relational agility: mindfulness, self-carefulness, compassionate communication, holding space and collaborative inquiry. Each of these pillars are constructed through knowledge, skills and awareness that interweave to create a practice that gives us the ability to ground into our values, to see and assess our own and other’s needs, to focus on who or what is most important in the moment, to assess our options and our capacity and to choose wisely.  Relational agility is a life-long learning process and practice that empowers us and others to lead meaningful interconnected lives.

 The Invisible Story of Microalgae

OVERVIEW

Feeling invisible is something we have all experienced at some point in our lives. That’s why I enjoy studying invisible microalgae. Microalgae are tiny organisms that can only be seen with the help of a microscope. They hold significance for our daily lives because they produce 50% of the oxygen we breathe. As a Fulbright National Geographic Digital Storyteller Fellow, I am working on a project in which I collect microalgae from the Panama Canal while documenting the process in both English and Spanish through videos, microscope pictures, and blog posts. Additionally, I am communicating the science of microalgae through the five senses: sight with microscopic pictures, smell with microalgae soap, touch with 3D printed microalgae, taste with nutritional foods (as they are high in proteins), and finally, hearing with music that synchronizes the movement of algae. By engaging all five senses to learn about microalgae, nobody will feel invisible, and everyone will come to know the invisible story of these remarkable organisms.

JENNY GIL

As a Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellow, Jennifer is currently embarking on a journey to three facilities of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute located in Panama. Her primary focus is the collection of microalgae samples, which she will document in both Spanish and English through blogs, microscopic imagery, and videos. Furthermore, she plans to curate an exhibit that will enable visitors to engage with the hidden realm of microalgae using all five senses.

Jennifer pursued her undergraduate studies in Interdisciplinary Science at the University of Puerto Rico. Recently, she achieved her Master’s degree in Environmental Science from Florida International University.
